HOA News and Information
Fourth of July Party, the summer season, warm weather, family and friends – what could be better? Happy Hour around the pool every Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00! Come join your neighbors and meet new friends! Pickleball has taken over in the community as the new outdoor sport. Presently, almost every day, the ‘re-defined’ tennis courts are being used. If you are interested, contact Lloyd Colby or Marie Healy for times and/or information. Outdoor Community Life in the “Meadows” at its best! Can it really be July – and finally some sun!? I guess we all wondered in June if summer was coming? The solar panels have been installed and reports are that the outdoor pool is being kept very warm. Remember that the pool hours for children are 12-3 outdoors and 3-5 indoors. The landscape and landscaping concerns have been addressed for this season. The thatching, seeding, trimming, fertilizing and new plantings have been completed. In fact, because we are aware of the increase of ticks this year, we added a tick application which was applied in June. There have been many reports of ticks so be careful when walking in tall grass, woods, etc. Eileen Duffy, Board member and landscape liaison has been working closely with 4-D to alert them to our concerns. That responsibility is twofold:
Social Committee Update
by Ellen Silverman Happy Summer, Everyone! The Spring Fling, at the Stony Brook Yacht Club, did indeed turn out to be a wonderful opportunity for the Setauket Meadows community to share some quality time. Special thanks to Janice Cerullo, Josephine Brandine, and their committee members, for their hard work and dedication to this event. A couple of reminders:
Welcome to Donna Heller, Doranne Metz, and Sherry Azoulay Klein, our newest Social Committee Members! We already know that you'll individually and collectively be wonderful additions to the committee. See you in the neighborhood! Real Estate News
by Phyllis Colby The real estate market has had some significant changes in the recent past. One factor is that there has been approximately a 25% decrease in homes. We can see this here with our low or non-existent inventory. As we know, taxes in Suffolk are high and with the new tax laws, homeowner can only take a maximum write off of $10,000. Our low taxes are very appealing. In addition there have been increases in mortgage rates with a prediction of more increases. Buyers are nervous about waiting to make purchases and want to lock in rates now. What does that mean for Setauket Meadows? With our low taxes, with a community that appeals to people that are downsizing, particularly from LI, our homes have become much more valuable! If you have any questions, I would be pleased to answer. Security Tip of The Month
by Ray Dawson Has your credit card been skimmed? Have you noticed any unusual charges on your credit card? If you have experienced this you need to take precautions when using your credit card at the local ATM and gas pumps. Thieves use credit card skimmers at these locations to read and record your account number. Cameras near the ATM and gas pumps are looking for your pin or zip code as you enter it when validating your credit card. Please look at the short video below to see information about skimmers. If you want more, do a search for "Credit card skimmers" in any search engine. You won't believe what the thieves are up to these days. |
Speaking of Sports
by Joe Polizzi Summer has just begun and that burning question of “How hot are summers in Florida?” surfaces every year. Snow birds return to the north to escape the hot, humid, oppressive summers of their southern havens. The argument goes that Florida becomes unbearable during June, July and August. But is that really true? Upon meteorological research the average daytime summer high in Florida is 92 degrees. But that’s not the entire picture, the humidity is the killer. Daily the relative humidity hovers around 88, and as we all know as that number approaches 90 or 100 we become sticky, hot and irritable. As contrasted with New York which in the past five years has averaged only 12 days of 90+ temperatures during the months of June, July and August and humidity for that same time period is in the mid 70’s. So if you look at the numbers New York is preferable to Florida during the summer months. But why we are up north during the summer isn’t just a weather related issue. Summer is the time to enjoy family, friends and your community. That’s why Setauket Meadows is 100% occupied during the summer. Where else can you have a competitive pickleball game in the morning, followed by an 8-ball billiard game in the afternoon, a refreshing dip in the pool and ending with cocktails(on Wednesday) in the evening. Now not everyone has a daily routine that might follow the above mentioned schedule but I know of many groups that have specific weekly regimens; for example, the golfers, the Mah Jong players, the card players, etc. So when we talk summer weather it’s truly secondary to why we are at Setauket Meadows; therefore, enjoy your community, family and friends but always remember to stay healthy and hitt’em straight.
