October 2019 Speaking of Sports
by Joe Polizzi
Setauket Meadows has become a hub of activity. One early morning while picking up the morning newspaper I couldn’t help but notice the significant number of walkers and bicycle riders. While the walkers are strolling around the community the bikers are whizzing by at a good pace. The bikes are either the standard two wheelers or a tricycle. Yet regardless of bike style riders circumnavigate the half mile outer ring of the neighborhood and continue for a good while. This same activity is also seen later into the evening hours when the temperatures drop and physical exertion is tolerable. We even have a skateboarder. The grandson of one of our residents is also frequently seen skating around in a very balanced and skillful manner- Oh to be young, agile and fearless again.
This summer three tournaments were held. Near the end of July on a warm, sunny Sunday Mario Carravetta and Rich Lester organized our first Pickleball Tournament. For a $5 entry fee sixteen participants took to our courts and played six matches in group play to narrow the field to four 2-man teams. The group play is similar to the format used in the Olympics and World Cup Soccer events. After two semi-final matches the teams of Ray Dawson and Dan Andreoli competed against Rick Justman and Mario Carravetta for the championship. The one game final match score of 11-6 was won by the calm, cool and strategic team of Ray Dawson and Dan Andreoli-Congratulations. The entry fee went to providing an abundance of cold bottled water, hot dogs distributed by Josephine Brandine, Donna Heller,Raphaela Carravetta and Pat Dawson and mugs and bottles of wine for the Champions. As a participant who made it to the semi-finals I enjoyed the competition and camaraderie. In the future I would like to see more players and spectators. It’s fun to watch your fellow residents display their athletic prowess.
Mario was not finished there. He also ran the postponed Labor Day Bocce Tournament. On Sunday, September 15th, fourteen two-person teams took to our bocce court to become the Setauket Meadows’ 2019 Champions. Play started at noon and progressed to the quarterfinals round. Most of the seven point games were quite competitive. After eighteen matches contestants and spectators sojourned to the clubhouse for lunch. Leftover food from the community Labor Day Observance was served and was just as good the second time around thanks to Josephine and Carl Furci. The highlight of the quarterfinals was a nip and tuck 8-6 victory of Valerie & Mike Vigliotti over Pat & Ray Dawson. The finals saw Valerie & Mike pitted against Mario and last minute substitute Joe Polizzi. Valerie’s constant precision made the match very close until Mario & Joe jumped to a 7-4 victory. The 2019 Bocce Champions each received a bottle of wine for their accomplishment. This was also an enjoyable day for players and spectators.
We’re not done. Kathy Fuller conducted the Setauket Meadows’ Mah Jogg Tournament on Monday, September 16th in our clubhouse. Twenty contestants paid a $15 entry fee for this prestigious event. On arriving at 9:30 AM players received a souvenir gift and then began group play. After four games in group play points are awarded and players move on to inter-group games. Play stopped at noon for a delicious catered lunch and after some small talk and rest the ladies were back to their tiles. Competition continued to almost 4:30PM when the winners were announced. Third place went Kathy Fuller, second place to Sheri Pleva and the 2019 Setauket Meadows Mah Jogg Champion is Lisa Justman. All reports indicated that the smoothly run event was enjoyed by all.
Many thanks to Mario, Rich and Kathy for going above and beyond in making these events so successful. I wish that these tournaments will become annual occurrences; thus proving that Setauket Meadows is not just a normal “run-of-the-mill” 55 and over community but one that encourages participation at all levels so that a positive neighborhood spirit can be built and endured. As always stay healthy and hitt’em straight.......Joe Polizzi

- Our annual Intergenerational Silly Magician Show was, as always, a great success. The (as always) added touch of including face painting made the afternoon even more special.
- We recently experienced our Labor Day Weekend Extravaganza. Our entertainers, technical crew and audience agree that our 50s Show was LOTS of fun. We’re all looking forward to our next community show. Our VERY well-attended Labor Day Party, although it had to be indoors, was wonderful: delicious food and even more delicious time spent with neighbors/friends.
- Stony Brook Harbor Wetlands Cruise ~ Relaxing, interesting, peaceful! If you couldn’t make it this time around, we just might do it again in the spring or summer.

- Chair Yoga with Sangeeta has been a fine addition to our social calendar. Those of us who attend on Friday mornings from 11:00-12:00 agree that we leave the class feeling much better than we did when we arrived. It’s $10 per session and you may attend whenever you’re able. Give it a try! I should mention that this is open to men as well as women.
- We’ll be suspending classes during the winter months. Watch your email for specifics!
- Happy Hour: As you know, Wednesdays from 5:00-7:00 PM are reserved for you. Even if we don’t have a themed Happy Hour planned for a particular Wednesday, please don’t hesitate to grab some neighbors and something to drink and/or munch on and spend a couple of hours schmoozing. We’ll of course let you know when to expect extra-special Happy Hours. As a matter of fact, I will let you know about one right now. On Wednesday, October 23, we will experience our first ever Happy Hour Trivia Night. Sherry Azoulay Klein and Donna Heller will be asking the questions. They’re working hard to prepare for this event and would appreciate an RSVP on or before October 19. Please contact me either via email or phone call to let me know that you’ll be there. You’ll see my contact info below.
- The Whatever You Want to Read Book Club: This has proven to be a great way to catch up with other reading enthusiasts. As is the case with chair yoga, feel free to attend whenever the mood strikes you. We share brief synopses about books that we’ve read or are currently reading. We invariably walk away with ideas for future readings.
- We meet on the last Thursday of each month at 1:00 PM (for approximately an hour. Our November/December meeting will be in early December. Then we’ll resume in April, when most of the snowbirds will have returned.

Why an Investment Property Should Be Your First Real Estate Purchase
Not ready to buy a home for yourself but want to take advantage of great market conditions? Consider buying an investment property! It's a trend that's taking over real estate, as savvy investors look to put their money in an appreciating asset. Here are five reasons to consider it.
1. Rates are crazy low. Lower rates mean more affordable lending, or more for your money if you choose to reach higher.
2. Because it will appreciate. According to CoreLogic, "The overall home price index (HPI) has increased on a year-over-year basis every month for seven years." The long-term price appreciation of real estate can provide one of the safest investments out there.
3. Because passive income is good. Yes, it's nice to know there will likely be appreciation over time, but the real key to success with investment properties is passive income.
"The best part about rental properties is that they provide a stable income," said Mashvisor. "What would be better than having a check sent to you every month? In order to have positive cash flow, you have to make sure you invest in a profitable rental property."
4. To turn it into a short-term rental. The short-term rental market has opened up a new world of opportunity for investors. By buying in the right location—by the beach, near a ski resort, or in close proximity to a popular annual event like Coachella, you have the potential of making a significant return in a short period of time. Just be sure to check the local laws, as lots of cities have been cracking down on Airbnb and other services.
5. Because it can help you buy the home of your dreams down the line."Buying an investment property before your first home does not imply that you won't have the funds to purchase your actual home at some point," said Mashvisor. "In fact, investment properties that have been purchased wisely and have grown in value can offer you a sizeable amount of wealth and equity."

SIGNS OF WEAR
You may be getting older:
- When your sweetie says, “Let’s go upstairs and make love”, and you answer, “Pick one,
- I can’t do both!”
- When your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes and you’re barefoot.
- When your pacemaker opens your garage door.
- When going bra-less pulls all the wrinkles out of your face.
- When you don’t care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don’t have to go along.
- When you are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police.
- When getting a “little action” means you don’t need to take any fiber today.
- When “getting lucky” means you find your car in the parking lot.
- When an “all-nighter” means not getting up to pee.

Computer or Security Tips

Here are a few tips to help you stay more secure when you are online:

Here are a few tips to help you stay more secure when you are online:
- Using the same password to log in to multiple accounts, like your Google Account, social media profiles, and retail websites, increases your security risk. It is like using the same key to lock your home, car and office – if someone gains access to one, all of them could be compromised. Creating a unique password for each account eliminates this risk and keeps your accounts more secure.
- A password manager helps protect and keep track of the passwords you use on sites and apps. Google’s password manager uses your saved passwords to safely and easily sign you in. Safari saves your password for each and every web site in which you must have a password in order to sign in and see your information.
- 2-Step Verification helps keep out anyone who shouldn’t have access to your account by requiring you to use a secondary factor on top of your username and password to log in to your account. With Google, for example, this can be a six-digit code generated by the Google Authenticator app or a prompt in your Google app to accept the login from a trusted device.
- Keep software up to date. In my humble opinion this is the most important thing you can do to protect your data. To protect yourself from security vulnerabilities, always use up-to-date software across your web browser, operating system, plugins, and document editors. When you receive notifications to update your software, do so as soon as possible.
- Review the software you use regularly to make sure you are always running the latest version available. Some services will automatically update themselves.
- When you are not using your computer, laptop, tablet, or phone, lock your screen to keep others from getting into your device. For added security, set your device to automatically lock when it goes to sleep.
- Phishing is an attempt to trick you into revealing critical personal information, like a password. It can take many forms, so it is important to learn how to spot suspicious emails and websites. For example, a hacker might create a login page that looks legitimate but is actually fake, and once your password is revealed the hacker could access your account or infect your machine.
- To avoid getting phished: Never click on questionable links. Always double-check the URL to make sure you’re entering your data into a legitimate website or app. Before submitting any information, make sure the site’s URL begins with “https.”
- Messages from strangers are always suspect, especially if they seem too good to be true – like declaring you have won something, offering prizes for completing a survey, or promoting quick ways to make money. Never click suspicious links, and never enter personal information into questionable forms or surveys.
- Be careful about using public or free Wi-Fi, even those requiring a password. These networks may not be encrypted, so when you connect to a public network, anyone in the vicinity may be able to monitor your Internet activity, such as the websites you visit and the information you type into sites. Even at home, protect the privacy and security of your browsing activity by making sure your home Wi-Fi network is encrypted and by setting a strong password. (What's a strong password? A strong password consists of at least six characters (and the more characters, the stronger the password) that are a combination of letters, numbers and symbols (@, #, $, %, etc.) if allowed. Passwords are typically case-sensitive, so a strong password contains letters in both uppercase and lowercase.)
